Pottery Classes: November

Enrolling for handmade pottery workshop!

Workshop focuses on creating handmade pottery items such as serving dishes (platters, large bowls, etc) and ornaments.

Students are guaranteed to learn how to make items they’ll be confident in giving as gifts!

Spaces are LIMITED so enroll soon!

Choose between Tuesday-OR- Saturday classes. .
Classes run for 3 weeks and meet for 2-3 hours each session.

Students also have 24 studio access outside class sessions to work at their own pace.

Tuesday class schedule is: 5:30-7:30ish pm meeting on Nov 5th, Nov 12th & Nov 19th.

Saturday class schedule is: 9-11ish am meeting on Nov 9th, Nov 16th & Nov 23rd.

Choose a time that works for you! (Makeups are easy to do too!)

Cost of the class is ALL INCLUSIVE and covers all supplies and materials and is only $250.00. (No Tax)

Students are guaranteed to learn how to make enough pots to give as gifts to offset cost of the class!

August Pottery Classes

Description

Classes will meet once per week for 4 weeks. Each class is 2 hours per class session. Classes are designed for introductory level students, as well as those who have had previous experience who wish to further develop their skills. Students will also have access to the studio outside of class time to practice on their own similar to a gym membership. Students will learn the basics of both hand-building pottery methods as well as using the potter’s wheel. The 4th and final week of class, students will also be introduced to glazing their pottery.

Instructor

Pottery classes are taught by expert potter, Rob Alsobrook, who has taught ceramics and art courses at the college and high school levels over 10 years and has been a practicing artist since 2000. He holds 2 degrees; a Bachelors from Union University where he studied under artist Lee Benson. Rob holds the highest collegiate degree available (Master of Fine Arts, equivalent to a Ph.D) in sculpture & ceramics from Bowling Green State University, Ohio. Rob has also worked with some of the most renowned ceramic artists of the day including, but not limited to, John Balistreri, Jun Kaneko, Don Reitz, and Jun Park. Rob and wife, Emily, started a cultural art exchange in China and Korea in 2014 and continue to advance dialog via the arts locally and internationally in the USA, China, North & South Korea.

Choose between 2 class times:

Tuesdays, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. (August 6, 13, 20, 27)

Wednesdays, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. (August 7, 14, 21, 28)

After the fire completely consumed his family’s house in the Oakland, CA area the only thing that remained were their white porcelain pots. During a brief phone interview Tsuruta shared that his Japanese family had specific uses for their pots depending on what the meal was.

Takemi Tsuruta remembers that the glaze on these porcelain dishes were still fully intact, despite temperatures exceeding 2000°F while burning his family’s house to the ground. In their household, their white porcelain dishes were used for spaghetti dinners and were the only items that survived the catastrophe. This stuck with Tsuruta throughout his educational years.

And even though at the time Takemi was just in junior high school, this experience formed a lasting artistic influence in his work even today.

Takemi’s work has been described as “a perfect blend of artful & practical,” “essential”, “striking”, “beautiful both empty & full”, “edgy & modern” just to reference a few of his clients’ remarks.

I personally find Tsuruta’s work refreshing in its simplicity, care and sleekness in a world that seems to lust over hyper complex approaches and developments to art, business, technology, and life. To be in the presence of such work is tranquilizing and certainly relaxing.

If you never thought a set of porcelain cups could be akin to sitting on a cool beach void of people, technology, and the hustle & bustle of the rat race, I invite you then into the artwork of Takemi Tsuruta where it is one of his design elements.

Bonsai Pots

Getting some custom bonsai pots made today in the studio between pottery classes and firing kilns.

It’s been SUPER busy around here just running the day-to-day not including building renovations too!
